What are Mulberries? Properties and benefits of a 100% Sicilian fruit

The Sicilian mulberries used for our Extra Mulberry Jam are the Sicilian fruit par excellence .

Belonging to the Moraceae family and native to Asia, Morus L. the Mulberry is characterized by the presence of small fruits commonly known in Catania as "i Ceusa".

Although it may seem like it on the surface, this fruit actually does not belong to the range of "berries" : it is an infructescence (Sorosio) composed of tiny fruits (Drupes) joined together and arranged on a stem. Each of them comes from a single flower.

Black and white mulberries: Sicilian production

The best period for consuming Sicilian mulberries is between June and July, when they ripen and can be bought at the market near your home.

The black ones (Morus Nigra) and the white ones (Morus Alba) are the varieties of mulberry trees that can be found.

There are, in reality, multiple varieties of this tasty, purely summer fruit. In Sicily, especially Catania, boasts many cultivations of black (or black) mulberries . The Ceusi niuri in Sicilian are much loved by the Sicilian population.

They are favorites because they are considered the most balanced among the known varieties: neither too acidic nor too sweet.

Who has never tasted the typical Ceusi Niuri granita ? If you then accompany it with cream it's "a so motti"!
